PICT Honorary Lectures II

Title page of Francis Galton's Finger Prints, with an arc of the author's ten inked fingerprints labelled by finger

We are happy to announce the second event in our PICT Honorary Lectures series: “Identity Politics: A Fanonian Critique,” a talk delivered by PICT honorary member Prof. Dr. Samir Gandesha (Simon Fraser University).

Identity politics reifies experience, positing the common experiences of certain identity groups as “things” that cannot be shared or accessed by others. However, this conception of experience contributes to the social polarization and political deadlock currently observed in many Western countries. This talk draws on the work of philosophers from Hegel to Marx and Fanon to overcome the pitfalls of identity politics and offer a philosophical alternative to its rigid understanding of experience.

The talk is free and open to the public.
