PICT Podcast Featured at CUNY

In an article entitled “Podcast delves into the prevailing narrative about older adults in the age of COVID-19,” the blog discusses PICT Voices episode 18, “The Old & The Restful,” in which PICT core faculty member Kristof K.P. Vanhoutte interviews Ruth Finkelstein, health policy expert and executive director of the Brookdale Center. In the podcast, Dr. Finkelstein critically analyzes the common perception that older people are particularly at risk from COVID-19, offering alternative and often surprising observations. As pointed out in the blog, for instance, “the rate of older adults suffering from anxiety or depression during the pandemic, while terrible, is lower than the rate among adults overall.”

Founded in 1974, the Brookdale Center for Healthy Aging is one of the first university-based gerontology centers in the USA. Approaching the topic of aging from a diversity of angles including research, training, and policy, the center aims “to ensure that aging is framed not as a disease, but as another stage in the life course.” Dr. Finkelstein, who has led the Center since 2018, has been active in the areas of aging and public health for over 30 years and has spearheaded programs such as the Age-friendly New York City Initiative, which won the 2013 award for “The Best Existing Age Friendly Initiative in the World” from the International Federation of Aging.
